What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily affects movement. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine deteriorate, leading to symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and balance issues. Individuals with Parkinson's often experience an array of non-motor symptoms, including sleep disturbances, depression, and difficulty with cognitive functions. The disease typically manifests in a gradual onset of symptoms, becoming more pronounced over time. While the exact cause remains unknown, genetic and environmental factors are believed to contribute. People with Parkinson's may exhibit a shuffling walk, a stooped posture, and slower, more deliberate movements. Despite the challenges, many individuals lead full lives with appropriate treatment and support, which can include medication, therapy, and lifestyle adjustments to help manage symptoms and maintain quality of life. Awareness and understanding are crucial in supporting those affected by this condition.

Testimonials

I have worked with Heather Mistry at Rehab 360 on multiple issues related to Parkinson's and neuropathy over the last few months. Heather is the best physical therapist I've ever worked with. It is amazing to me how much we can fit into an hour. She is very knowledgeable, skilled, creative and encouraging. I recommend her without reservation. Rehab 360 is a beautiful, spacious, and high energy place. I sense that the other physical therapists are also excellent.

I have been seeing physical therapists for over five years to address issues connected to my having Parkinson’s disease. This year, I switched to Rehab Health 360, and I am very happy I did. Naseem, the owner, saw me for my first visit. I was impressed by both her warmth and professionalism. I was particularly impressed by her emphasis in gathering measurable data, such as the limits of my range-of-motion to inform my treatment plan. Naseem assigned Heather to be my regular therapist. Heather was the perfect choice. She listens carefully and treats the therapy as a collaboration. In addition, Heather also coaches my Rock Steady Boxing Class for Parkinson’s, which both allows her to observe me doing an extensive set of movements and exercises but also equips her with additional perspectives on both Parkinson’s disease and effective strategies for mitigating its effects. I highly recommend Rehab Health 360.
